Law and Ethics
It was a specialty of my teacher (Mrs. Coyer) to give us her copyright and law and ethics lesson each year. She gave us dozens of lessons from Ice Ice Baby, to even our local rival school getting involved in scandalous drama.
Through these lessons that she gave and facilitating copyright within our weekly shows, these lessons have helped me understand its meaning and importance of sections of laws and ethics.
Additionally, we covered multiple sensitive topics on VNN, with a walkout on gun violence, and a walkout in protest of ICE. It was very important to look at multiple variables to make sure we had a neutral and ethic stance on both protests. We remained neutral throughout our segments and even provided both sides to the arguments to remain neutral.
I believe through journalism that we have a wonderful opportunity to tell stories and provide all of the sides to a story, and through my opportunities in video, yearbook, newspaper, and through our publications we have successfully executed that idea. From Arts Culture and Entertainment, to the most breaking of sports stories.
This video was on one of our walkouts that occurred towards the beginning of the school year. We had to navigate a neutral side to the story to keep fairness to all parties.
Commitment to Diversity
PUYALLUP IS ONE OF THE MOST DIVERSE CITIES IN WASHINGTON.
AND WE’RE NOT DONE GROWING.
Throughout my years at Puyallup High School I’ve seen one of the most diverse communities grow, and I knew I wanted to pursue that through my work in media. One of the mottos in our class is “Everyone has a Story”, which means that even the kids who are the quietest in the school can tell you a story that students need to know, want to know, or should know, which is also one of our mottos. We still to this day commit to telling everyone’s stories from the most popular kid at the lunch table to the quietest kid on the block.
When I say Puyallup is a diverse community, I mean we are so diverse that all of our diverse clubs came together to paint a mural about unity at our school. In this spotlight, we covered how the mural was made, who contributed, and more.
This club spotlight covered our club “Latinos Unidos” and their upcoming planning for Day of the Dead. This video was one of our first club spotlights of the year covering one of our many diverse clubs.
