Editing, Leadership, and Teambuilding

Helping lead our program throughout all the categories of journalism may be more of a challenge than others may think. Not only do you have to lead by example, but also make sure everyone else is doing their work so that way the whole program can put the “puzzle” together. However, I would not trade that honor for anything as I have never been more blessed to lead some of our classes in our program. I feel as if leadership is just born in some people, and I think I may have possibly been blessed with that trait. With so many other great leaders around me, I have had so much fun working with all sorts of faces and opinions. Following is some of my most prestigious editing moments from that class and even sparking new interests from the program.

Accountability is one of the biggest factors in being a good leader. Through multiple whiteboards, pre-class conversations, and more I help keep our students on track and make sure they know A. what they’re working on and B. when it needs to be done by. Through all these methods it helps me become a stronger leader and they get better with their own journalism.

On the left is one of our many whiteboards in class displaying information, this one showing upcoming VNN episodes and what content is going to be featured in each one.

This board is constantly in rotation with new ideas, plans, and more. When class starts I start by saying important announcements, then move into watching the previous VNN and then we do brainstorming. This occurs every day and causes our students to be thinking about new ideas and possibilities every day and not just on “Brainstorm Monday”

Editing

Firstly, we start with my highest pressure editing moment of my life. During our schools Lip Dub that occurs every homecoming, I was tasked with editing and helping produce this wild event. From the moment filming was completed I managed to edit together the music, clips where we cut, and overall graphics and such in a record editing time with three and a half hours from filming concluding to its release.

What I not only found to enjoy in telling people’s stories, I also found joy in storytelling. From what started as filming for fun with friends, To entering in film festivals with films produced, edited, and starring myself.

Viking News Network

At the time of submission, we are on Episode 56 of our student television network, “Viking News Network”. All 56 of those episodes were edited and produced by yours truly, three times a week. As one of my greatest honors that I am bestowed with in this program, following are some of our best episodes this year.
